Here’s a list of the actors/actresses whom I most enjoy watching. I will watch a movie just because one or a combination of them (wow!) is in it. Often it’s their sincerity and passion for the art that shows through and takes a performance from good to great!
Abhay Deol: Although this is not a ranked list, Abhay is my Hero No. 1; not only for his natural, graceful acting but also for his sense of individuality and truly artistic choice of films. He may have made use of his family connections in the beginning, but has since blazed his own glorious trail. (Did you know he’s an artist, and made and sold t-shirt designs before his acting days?)
I disliked him in Socha Na Tha (then realized it was his character Viren that I actually disliked) and liked him in Ahista Ahista & Manorama 6FU; but with Oye Lucky & Dev D, I fell for him hook, line and sinker! He’s a curious mix of wackiness, intelligence, naturalness, subtlety and vulnerability; each of which he can turn off and on like a tap. Waiting with bated breath for his next release… (Junction?)
Kay Kay Menon: For many of us, the name Kay Kay Menon conjures up a vivid close-up image of Sarkar‘s Vishnu leering at a starlet as he urges her to accept an expensive gift – it’s a scene not easily forgotten. Kay Kay doesn’t go over the top, but just hovers tantalisingly there, his face a changing canvas that conveys enough to make any dialogue redundant. And yet, this brilliant scene is only a minor speck in Kay Kay’s career spanning many memorable performances, with a lot more still to come.
He has the gift of gliding smoothly from role to role, running the gamut from the temperamental wannabe-don (Sarkar), the tense, pragmatic cop (Black Friday) and the angry prince (Gulaal) to the suave ‘other’ man (Main Meri Patni Aur Woh), and the conservative, childish husband (Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd). Versatility, thy name is Kay Kay!
Konkona Sen: A breath of fresh air! Konkona made her mark in style as the completely authentic Minakshi, er, Meenakshi Iyer in Mr. & Mrs. Iyer, getting the Tamil accent to perfection. A believably portrayed South Indian character in a nonSouth film is as rare as an agnostic Tam-Brahm! As the mentally disturbed, lonely girl in 15 Park Avenue, played naturally and with professional restraint, she made me weep. Omkara had her as the friendly, rustic, feisty sister-in-law; once again her accent and dialogue delivery were spot-on.
She elevated the quality of Luck By Chance with another convincingly played lead role. Konkona is a born actress – she is so totally comfortable in any role. Even in a run-of-the-mill Yashraj movie like Laga Chunari Mein Daag, Konkona was her natural self, lending a touch of class to the proceedings. Truly, there’s no limit to what this actress can achieve!
Farooque Shaikh: Perhaps it was the pleasant, warm ambience of the movies that he did, but Farooque Shaikh always seems nice, suave yet somehow grounded. He used to be part of a hit jodi with Deepti Naval (remember Chamko!).
His flawless, effortless Urdu and laconic style of humour are what I like best about him. My favourite FS roles are those in Chashme Baddoor and a DD telefilm titled Hindola (both had great music too).
Leonardo DiCaprio: Chalo Hollywood! Titanic’s prince-of-hearts cast his spell on almost a whole generation of girls who swooned over Jack Dawson, the tragic romantic hero. While that was a tad too filmy for me, I later saw Blood Diamond, and Leo’s performance hit me right between the eyes. His turn as the unfortunate police mole in The Departed makes you want to reach out to him and comfort him – I remember going almost hysterical whenever Costigan was in a dangerous situation and didn’t know it. Leo has a restless energy that magnetises the screen. He manages to convey emotion with such depth that you can almost see the layers of feeling behind each subtle expression.

Kate Winslet: Titanic would have been incomplete if Rose were played by anyone but the breathtakingly beautiful Kate W. Her graceful femininity, near-perfect features and that charming British accent are a deadly combination, and even if her acting skills had been a notch lower, she would still be on my list. Besides, she’s a brave, natural artiste who doesn’t try too hard to fit into the stereotype of the Hollywood star.
Well that’s all I have the time for right now. Sitaare aur bhi hain, but maybe in another post. (Sorry Ghalib sahab.)

That’s a great list there…
In fact, they for a part of my favorite list too…
Abhay was great in oye lucky and devd.. and kaykay was simply splendid in gulaal and sarkar, and even in life in a metro…
Farooq Shaikh proved his versatility by playing ‘Bashu’ in Katha movie.. completely opposite to his character in Chashme Baddoor… and his usual types…
Dicaprio was great in Aviator too..
@Ronak: I’ve seen a bit of Katha – missed most of the first half – but I agree with you, FS certainly was v. different, yet natural, in that role. And I liked Dicaprio in ‘Revolutionary Road’ too, he smoothly alternates between the emotional and the understated.
I hateld when Kay Kay did Drona. Never really understoon why he took up such a role and i thought he overacted way too much. Leonardo is amazing specially in Blood Diamond and The Departed. quite versatile as well. I can see him go Tom Hanks way.
I liked Will Smith for Hitch and Pursuit of Happyness
It was that bad, was it? I spared myself the trouble and stayed away from Drona. Like the dead people in ‘The Sixth Sense’ I only see what I want to see
so i watch only those movies which are likely to reinforce the image I have of my favourite actors
I find Leo more magnetic than Tom Hanks, that childlike vulnerability combined with a fierce passion is a super combination.
I am also agree with your statement about FS for his great work in the telefilm Hindola. I’ve seen it once six years ago. It was very nice.I’ve also tried to find its music on internet but didn’t get anything. “Aisa bhi din naseeb hona tha” and “Yadon ke dariye me mang bhari thi” both are really heart touching. Ma’m can you please do me a favour? Can you suggest me any source from where I can collect these.
Pratik, I am so glad to find I’m not the only one who remembers those songs from Hindola so fondly! Unfortunately, I also share your predicament of not being able to find those songs
Songs of telefilm Hindola were released as an audio cassette by BMG CRESCENDO (INDIA) PVT LTD, Mumbai in 1995 under the title – “RAAG HINDOL”… cassette code no ALTO 30018… worth a try for all those keen on getting the soundtrack. In Mumbai, you may also contact Shri Mohinderjeet singh, noted Music director (incidentally the father of Chintu Singh, noted guitarist)
And was it really 6 years ago that you saw Hindola? In my memory, it was atleast 15yrs ago that it was shown on DD.
Hi
Please if anybody can provide me the song from Hindola telefilm….” Aisa bhi din naeeb hona tha ” ……love this song..please provide the link or email it to me at kapoorabhinav@yahoo.co.in .

It was telecast today on DD.. And I found it only from the middle so, caught only the last 45 minutes of the film. Oh! what a beauty it is. I managed to listen to ‘aisa bhi din’. And fell in love with it all over again.

Lovely! Thank you, Prabha. If you have these songs, kindly do share them. As you can see, there are many of us here dying to listen to them once again.
Prabha, I seem to recall that there was yet another song – the one that the music teacher teaches Farooque’s sister (other than Yaadon ke dariye mein). Any idea what that song is?
Hi Prabha
Hindola was a movie that I loved watching years ago on DD. I too had recorded the songs then on a cassette. I dont remember however, whose voice it is in the songs yaadon ke dariye mein maan bhar rahi kirane and Jaane na more ji ki
Would you know? if yes, please do email
Hi Prabha,
Can u please email song aisa bhi din naseeb hona tha, i could not find it anywhere. I could never understand how such good songs/ ghazals could not get popular, perhaps due to one or two airing of Hindola on DD. I once listened this ghazal and can remember the melody forever.
regards
Rashid Khan
Rashid, Prabha has posted the link to the songs, you can download them from there.
hello Geeta
Just saw Hindola on National Television and thought of searching for it here and found you guys instead..
Its immensely sacred a screenplay for me indeed as it seems to be my story in there somehow. Only that FS was independent and i’m dependent.
May some good sense prevail upon my wife.
God bless everyone involved in making this writeplay a success in true sense.
Khwaab mein mat jiyo.
I also remember Hindola very well. It was aired in the 90s around the time Shekhar Suman’s series Reporter was on air if I am not wrong.
The Lead Cast was – Farooque Shaikh, Smita Jaykar, Shekhar Suman, Vikram Gokhale.
As luck would have it the Telefilm was show yesterday on DD as the match was cancelled but I only got to see the end credits.
yesterday I was seeing TV around 1 pm ..changing TV channels. I stopped at DD1.it was a serial.characters were Smita Jayakar, Farooq Shiekh, Shekhar Suman,Vikram Gokhale..there were two songs as told by pratik above.. I liked them so much that as soon as I finished it, I searched them at internet & get to know that someone else is also searching like me.. I was so glad.. although also get disappointment when I didn’t get them.i came to know through above post that it was a telefilm HINDOLA as i didn’t see it from starting..it remind me all those golden days of DD1.i like DD1 old serials very much like this telefilm..Simta Jayakar was awesome..
