Sarfaroshi ki tamanna – Gulaal version

In my previous post, I had referred to the sarcastic use of that rousing anthem of India’s revolutionary freedom movement –  “Sarfaroshi ki Tamanna” – in Anurag Kashyap’s labour of love and angst, Gulaal

I have now got the lyrics of the reinvented version by Piyush Mishra (sent me by a friend who’s also a shayar – Gulaal being so much a writer’s movie is bound to appeal to poets). I’m doing my bit and passing on the favour to like-minded enthusiasts:

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil me hai
Dekhna hai zor kitna bazu-e-kaatil me hai
Waqt aane pe bataadenge tujhe e aasmaan
Hum abhi se kya batayen kya hamare dil me hai

Oh re Bismil kaash aate aaj tum Hindustaan
Dekhte ki mulk saara kya tashan, kya thrill mein hai
Aaj ka launda yeh kehta hum to bismil thak gaye
Apni aazaadi to bhaiya laundiya ke til mein hai.

Aaj ke jalson me Bismil ek gunga gaa raha.
Aur behron ka wo rela naachta mehfil mein hai
Haath ki khadi banaane ka zamaana lag gaya
Aaj to chaddi bhi silti englison ki mill mein hai

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil me hai…
….kya batayen kya hamare dil me hai

  2. Ohh Thanks,
Search for the lyrics brought me here. Pleased to find it. Movie and music both are rocking.

  3. Piyush Mishra is simply great.

You said it, Priyank! Esp. when you consider that Piyush Mishra also composed the music, sang AND acted in the movie!
Another multi-talented person I greatly admire is Vishal Bhardwaj, he’s a gift from the gods to hindi cinema.

  4. Satiish

thanks…I was desperately looking for it…

No matter how hard I try…for the moment I just cant stop my mind from drooling over the lyrics of GULAAL.

I remember, when I was a kid, a murder had taken place in our town. The killer had used that a knife which, when inserted into your abdomen and twisted, comes back with a whole lot of intestines. These songs have similar effect for your heart and mind. Your mind comes to a standstill and your heart bleeds….Sorry to use this gross description but that is what they really make your feel.

    • Geeta

Gross example for sure, but if something this bad happened during your impressionable years it’s bound to stay with you. I’m sure Gulaal’s poetry has penetrated many hearts & minds. Any specific lines that stick with you?

I love the lines in para 2 of Duniya

Ae karwat le soyi haqeeqat ki duniya oh duniya,

Khwahish mein lipti zaroorat ki duniya oh duniya re

Hai insaan ke sapno ki, niyat ki duniya oh duniya

Especially the last line…wherein the word niyat is so very apt. Niyat is all that matters in everything.

    And at the end….

Wo kahen hai ki duniya,Yeh itni nahi hai
Sitaaro se aage jahan aur bhi hai,
Yeh hum hi nahi hai, wahan aur bhi hai,
Hamari hare k baat hoti wahin hai,
Hume aitraaz nahi hai kahin bhi,
Wo aayi zamil pe sahi hai,
Magar falsafa yeh bigad jaata hai jo,
Wo kehte hai…aalim yeh kehta wahan ishwar hai,
Faazil yeh kehta wahan allah hai,
Kabur yeh kehta wahan issa hai,
Manzil yeh kehti tab insaan se ki,
Tumhari hai tum hi sambhalo yeh duniya,
Yeh ujde hue chand baasi charago,
Tumhare yeh kale iraado ki duniya,
Ohh ri duniya, oh ri duniya…

This paragraph hits your senses like a dart. Absolutely amazing. Just amazing.

I am not much of a peotry reader but I can say that Piyush has written them with a mind of an Urdu written and recited them with the passion of a Hindi orator. Thats why maybe they just refuse to leave your subconcious mind :P:P.

  7. and my search ends here…

    piyush mishra is fantastic!

Jaisi bachi hai waisi ki waisi bachaalo ye duniya
Apna samajhke apno ke jaisi uthaalo ye duniya

This is the need of the hour, friends. Need to forget everything else and just try to at least keep the world in the best form from now onwards.

    • Geeta

You said it, Amit! Starting with our own country, still one of the few sane nations in the world, but slowly slipping into insanity…

  9. Manu

    oh man awesome lyrics!!!!!!!
just to correct in this line
“Haath ki khadi banaane ka zamaana lag gaya”
its lad gaya not lag gaya

  10. BALVINDER AJMANI

    SIMPLY MINDBLOWING ND GREAT……………..

D LAST LINE “Aaj to chaddi bhi silti englison ki mill mein hai” IS ORSEM………

  11. The line “Dekhte ki mulk saara kya tashan, kya chill mein hai” is wrong. The last part. I can’t figure out what it is but its certainly not “chill mein hai”. I am surprised no one has pointed it out yet but yeah, its super that you post this!

    • Geeta

Aditya, sorry for the late response. I think ‘kya chill mein hai’ is very much accurate, its a sarcastic take on the nouveau ‘cool’ of the modern Indian navyuvak! 🙂

  12. Abhinav

the line in which it says “dekhate ki mulk saara hai tashan main, chill main hai”, there’s a mistake there, its “thrill” instead of chill. please correct that 🙂

And I just love this song. Thanks for the lyrics.

  13. Amit

Lyrics here are just awesome. After watching this movie I recalled some of the incidents or accidents I can’t say from my own childhood. The characters portrayed in the film remind me the grotesque people in my village where my father was chased for the whole night by some villagers to kill. It was just over for a petty politics that took policy over not attending the marriage ceremony of daughter of pradhan(leader) of my village.

    • Geeta

That’s shocking! Rural India is worlds away from the India of IT companies and bank jobs. I wonder if there can possibly be any solution to the violent feudalism of our villages – it seems to be an integral part of rural life. Where there is simplicity, there is also gullibility, which is bound to be taken advantage of.

  14. BekaS

Piyush Mishra Ji ke Gulaal Movie ke saare songs jabar dast lage…..amazing….

specially this one, tab shahar hamara sota hai and some lines of Rana Ji song…. Jaise binaa baat iraak me jaa ke jam gaye uncle sam….and jaise door desh ke tower me ghush jaaye aeroplane…..

    really nice 🙂

    regards,

  18. chill ho ya thrill muda wo nahi…muda toh modern yuva ki feel se hai… Kai logon ko iss modern “sarfarosi ki tamana” se dukh pahucha hoga per… Kise ne sahi kaha hai…”sach katwa hota hai” Mujhe bas dukh iss baat ka hai ki jo discussion iss ke arth isski meaning pe hona chahiye wo iske lyrics pe hui Jaisa ke ek frnd. Ne kaha (i like ds song and also other song of gulal) Iske feel ko samjha…isse like kerke chill mat kero… Ye koi rock music nahi…ek shocking sach hai…! Jai hind…

  22. Ohh Finally got the lyrics!!
Gulaal: each song is Piyush special. After Paresh rawal, Boman irani, one man who can take indian film industry to good riches is Piyush. The sarcasm and the simplicity by which he narrates his heart is truly delightful. Raja ji mharo gusse mein aaye, or Ho ri duniya, and this personal version of Sarfaroshi ki tammanna..wow.
I was giving speech in my college alumni after 7 years and I used the line aaj ka launda toh marta laundiya k teel pe hai, got me a big appluase.
Please listen to IK Bagal from Gangs of wasseypur that also is one song to recon about. And his acting, Man! A real talent.
    Jaane kahan gaye woh log,
